Edna May suffered only cosmetic damage, Coast Guard says

TIVERTON — The 70-foot Tiverton-based offshore lobster boat Edna May and the 605-foot tanker Iver Prosperity collided Monday morning about 25 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard, the Coast Guard reports.

There were no injuries on either vessel and only minor damage, Petty Officer Third Class Ryan Noel said Tuesday.

Edna May sustained minor cosmetic damage, while two small punctures were found on the starboard quarter of the tanker. It was not immediately known whether those punctures were a result of the collision, officer Noel said.

The tanker is being inspected in the Port of Providence. At the time of the collision it had been headed to Providence from St. John, Nova Scotia, with a load of petroleum.

Officer Noel said the Coast Guard received a mayday call about the collision at around 8:10 Monday evening over VHF emergency broadcast channel 16.

The Coast Guard cutter Coho, an 87-foot patrol boat, escorted the Edna May back to is Tiverton dock.

The Coast Guard also dispatched a helicopter and a fixed wing airplane from Air Station Cape Cod.

The 13-year-old Iver Prosperity operates under the flag of the Marshall Islands.

The Coast Guard investigation is continuing.
