Snow and ice to blame for roof leaks, officials will test air quality

Barrington Middle School's unexpected break will continue through Thursday.

A nor'easter that brought snow and rain to the area forced the closure of all schools across Barrington on Tuesday, March 14. But it was a series of roof leaks at the middle school that have resulted in canceled classes there on Wednesday and Thursday, March 15 and 16.

Middle school principal Andrew Anderson alerted parents to the news in an email on Wednesday afternoon. It stated, in part:

"Our custodial staff, roofing company, and professional cleaning company have been hard at work cleaning and remediating," said Dr. Anderson. "Due to the number of rooms impacted, the number of people cleaning/remediating, and the amount of machinery being used to clean, restricted access is necessary."

The principal said officials will continue to monitor the situation as the ice on the school roof continues to melt.

According to the statement, the impacted rooms include 14, 205, 203, 207, 210, 211, 212, 213, 216, 218, 230, the robotics room, the library, the math specialist's room, the teacher's room, the ELL room, and the boy's locker room.

The principal said that although there are no classes on Thursday, teachers will be reporting to the building.

"Faculty will be using only a few rooms throughout the building for professional development purposes," he said.

"Once cleaning and remediation have been completed, air quality testing will be conducted."

Barrington residents have approved a $68.4 million bond to build a new middle school. A key meeting is set for Thursday night, March 16, where voters will be asked to approve a measure to exceed the 4 percent tax levy cap. Officials have said that it is necessary to exceed the cap in order to afford debt service payments on the bond and increases to the school and municipal operating budgets.

The Thursday night meeting is at the high school auditorium at 7 p.m.
