Thomas Santos, 84, East Providence

Thomas (Jose) Santos, of Johnston and formerly East Providence, passed away on December 17, 2020. Born December 24, 1935, son of the late Beatrice Simmons and Joseph Santos, he was also known as Joseph Santos Jr.

Tom was a lifelong musician and vocalist; proficient on keyboards, drums, saxophone and guitar, performing with many well known groups, such as “The Sultans,” during the course of his career. He was also a member of the Rhode Island Rhythm and Blues Association.

He was the owner of Video Specialists, was an avid golfer, bowler and skier. He was an Army veteran and member of the Military Police. Tom gave freely of his time as an entertainer for residents of senior housing and performing for the homeless at Newman Congregational Church.

Tom was predeceased by his brother, Carl Florence, and is survived by his daughter Lisa Marian, her husband Steve and three grandchildren: Persephone, Tai and Joseph.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, there will be no public services. Donations in Tom’s name can be made to The Bread of Life Food Pantry, Newman Congregational United Church, PO Box 4764, Rumford, R.I., 02916. Arrangements by Family’s Choice Cremation, familyschoicecremation.com.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
