Think Spring: All Seeds Want to Grow ~ Understanding Germination & Seed Starting

Posted

Join Amanda Ward, URI Master Gardener for a conversation about all things seeds; the benefits of starting plants from seed, what a seed needs to germinate, the best seeds to start indoors, and various seeds for various garden beds. Amanda started volunteering in the garden at Norman Bird Sanctuary weeding and planting in 2015. By the winter of 2017, she was in the URI Master Gardener Program and offered to redesign The Good Gardens at Norman Bird Sanctuary.

The Good Gardens is both a demonstration and educational garden, serving as an important part of the NBS 325-acre outdoor classroom that accentuates the study of plants, pollinators, decomposers, nutrient cycling, food webs, Native American agriculture, and so much more. The Good Gardens is an organic vegetable and pollinator garden with a high tunnel, composting area and Hügelkultur; an educational community hub for kids and adults; and a donation garden for Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
