The’ve got sailboat buoys, bird feeder buoys, a breaching whale buoy and lamp buoys that actually work.

Other buoys feature all manner of Westport wildlife — osprey, egrets, a ‘Jackson Atlantic Pollock, and “Buoyant Tern” — a mother tern about to feed a minnow to its baby.

There’s a “Beat the Winter Blues” buoy — a buoy transformed to tall, tropical cocktail glass and swizzle stick.

One buoy serves as monument to “Hens and Chickens” — reef and Rhode Island Red in one.

For the third year, the Westport Watershed Alliance challenged area artists to set their imaginations loose on simple wooden lobster buoys.

And just as the first year that Gay Gillespie came up with this idea for a mid-winter fund-raiser and diversion, artists answered in a big way.

Some of the regions best artists, from Westport, Little Compton, Tiverton, Dartmouth and beyond, have again turned their talents to bare wooden lobster buoys and the results are stunning.

Buoys are piling up at the Alliance offices — they’re expecting over 60 by the time all the late arrivals are in.

“Remarkable,” said the Alliance’s Steve Connors of the buoys submitted as of late last week.

They’ll be on display for a week starting Feb. 27 at the DeDee Shattuck Gallery, 1 Partner’s Lane, Westport, and then will be given out to the highest bidder at a reception on Saturday, March 5 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
