Summer Film Series features 'Weekend Sailor'

Posted

The Westport Summer Film Series presents its second film of the season, “The Weekend Sailor,” on Wednesday Aug. 2, at Weatherlow Farms. Weekend Sailor is a feature documentary about the inaugural 1973 Whitbread Round the World Race (known today as The Ocean Race).

Expert crews from Europe and South Africa were assembled to compete against each other, but an inexperienced Mexican man also signed up. In his fifties, with a crew that included his wife, son, family and friends, Weekend Sailor tells the thrilling story of Ramon Carlin’s quest to take on the world’s most accomplished sailors in the most challenging and deadly race on earth.

Guest speaker Robert C. Glover III, a maritime expert with 50 years of experience in the traditional tall ship, tugboat, and wooden boat industry, will lead a Q&A session after the screening. Mr. Glover, a Rigging and Marine Hardware Specialist at R&W Rope of New Bedford, has sailed over 154,000 nautical miles in the Northern Atlantic and Eastern Pacific Basins, Caribbean Sea, Great Lakes, North Sea, Baltic Sea, Panama Canal, Canadian Coasts and Mediterranean Sea aboard two-masted schooners, square riggers, salvage tugs and harbor tugs. His tall ship experience led him to command boats featured in Steven Spielberg’s Academy Award-nominated film, “Amistad.”

The screening is free and open to the public but seats are limited. Tickets may be reserved at the wptculturalcouncil.org./film-series/. Doors open at 6 p.m. to enjoy the pastural view, at which time refreshments are available. Film screening at 7 p.m.

The Westport Summer Film Series is presented by the Westport Cultural Council and supported by the Westport Cultural Council through a grant from the Helen E. Ellis Charitable Trust administered by Bank of America.
