Stephen Knight Hess, formerly of Barrington

Stephen Knight Hess, of Rehoboth, Mass. passed away Saturday, Jan. 30, 2021. He was the son of the late Gwendolyn (Fairchild) and John R. Hess III.  He is survived by his wife Patricia Lemon Hess, daughter Korinne (Tim) Sullivan, sons Knight Hess and Kyle (Sara) Hess, sister Marcia Hess and brother Peter (Elaine) Hess.

He was born in Providence, RI on Jan. 6, 1943. Steve graduated from Barrington High School in 1961, where he excelled in sports and was named an All-State football player in 1960. He graduated from URI in 1965.  In 2019, the 1960 football team that Steve co-captained was named to the Barrington High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

He lived in Rehoboth, Mass. for the last 45 years and was a lifelong resident of Hog Island, RI. He ran his family’s chemical distributor business, John R. Hess & Sons, Inc. until his retirement in 1988. Steve was an avid tennis player and an owner of Mount Hope Racquet Club in Bristol, RI. He also enjoyed sailing and spent years sailing through the Atlantic and Caribbean. He became a Bridge Diamond Life Master and played and instructed in Palm Beach, FL and Rhode Island.

He will be interred in Swan Point in Providence, RI in the Lemon/Russell Plot at a later time. Please visit smithmason.com for online condolences.
