Some of Rhode Island’s most spectacular and breathtaking protected places will be celebrated during this year’s statewide Land Trust Days, a series of events hosted by land trusts across the region from Aug. 25 through Oct. 29. For a current list of events, visit the Rhode Island Land Trust Council’s website.

The Barrington Land Conservation Trust will offer six free guided walks during Land Trust Days. All are free and open to the public. All ages are welcome. Advance registration is required as space is limited.

Johannis Farm Wildlife Preserve covers 32 acres of field, forest and salt marshes on the border of the Palmer River, off Sowams Road in Barrington. The walks will be held Wednesday, Sept. 6, from 4 to 5:30 pm and Sunday, Oct. 15, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Register at www.blct.org/events.

Sowams Woods is a 12-acre network of woodland trails along the shore of Echo Lake in Barrington, rich with history and significance as part of the ancestral homelands of the Pokanoket people. The walks will be held Saturday, Sept. 9, from 9 to 10 a.m., and Wednesday, Oct. 18, from 4 to 5 p.m. Register at www.blct.org/events.

PIC-WIL Nature Preserve, once home to the Deep Rock Water bottling plant, is a 17-acre expanse of forest, field, salt marsh and coastal dunes on the east shore of the Providence River in Barrington. The walks will be held on Sunday, Sept. 10, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., and Saturday, Oct. 14, from 9 to 10:30 am. Register at www.blct.org/events.

The Barrington Land Conservation Trust has preserved nearly 300 acres of open space in perpetuity for the benefit of the public. For more information on the Land Trust and how you can get involved, visit www.blct.org or email cindyelder@blct.org.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
