Another year, another state title for the Barrington High School math team. On Thursday, April 9, Barrington won its 23rd math state championship in the past 27 years.
The Eagles outscored every other team in the state at the math championship, which was held at Cumberland High School. Barrington scored 149 points and finished 10 points ahead of second-place Wheeler School. The championship Barrington High School team featured Iris Yang, Siddharth Gupta, Sophia Gao, Matthew Tian, Montana Wells and Max Thimme.
Barrington High School math team coach Bob Marley said Yang, Thimme, Wells and Tian received perfect scores at the state meet. He added that Yang also received her second perfect score during the regular season — she is one of only six students to ever receive a perfect score for the entire regular season.
At the math state championship, individual members of the Barrington High School team were presented with trophies for placing in the top-10 in the state this year. Yang had the highest score in the state with a perfect score of 72 points. Wells, a sophomore, placed second in the state with 69 points. Thimme, also a sophomore, finished sixth with 68 points, and Gao, a junior, placed eighth with 66 points.
Marley said 37 students participated on the Barrington High School math team this year.
“In addition to the A team members, many students deserve special recognition for making valuable contributions and showing dedication to the team,” Marley wrote in a message to the Barrington Times.
Marley praised the efforts of seniors Andres Gil, Nate Coutant, Allena Kelly, and Parker Lewis; juniors Aagami Mohiraaj, Benjamin Zhang, Nathan Leicht, and Zoe Dyer; sophomores Dakota Wells, Kaya Yucel, Siddharth Hariharan, and Katelyn Xian; freshmen Alexander Wu, Catherine Chiu, Tobey Kim and Arjun Bansal; and eighth-grader Emily Ding.
