PORTSMOUTH — A geotechnical survey for SouthCoast Wind is scheduled to begin here on Monday, Oct. 30.

Geotechnical operations are planned for 13 test boring locations along Boyds Lane and Anthony Road. The test borings will be roughly 5 inches five inches in diameter and will be promptly backfilled according to guidelines set by the Town of Portsmouth and the R.I. Department of Transportation, according to SouthCoast Wind.

Conducted by GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc. (GZA) and Geologic Earth Exploration Inc. (Geologic), testing is expected to be completed on Nov. 16. The crew will operate from approximately 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

The geotechnical survey is required to “mature the design” of SouthCoast Wind’s proposed underground transmission system, the wind energy company stated in a press release.

SouthCoast Wind is developing an offshore lease area off the coast of New England with the potential to generate over 2,400 megawatts of clean electricity.

The company, formerly known as Mayflower Wind, has an application before the R.I. Energy Facility Siting Board (EFSB) to connect offshore wind turbines located 30 miles south of Nantucket to the regional transmission system at Brayton Point in Somerset.

To do that, the developer is proposing to run transmission cables up the Sakonnet River, beneath Island Park Beach, up Boyds Lane and Anthony Road, under the Montaup Country Club before reentering waters in Mt. Hope Bay and making final landfall in Somerset.
