The yearly concert, scheduled for Sunday, August 13 at the Westport Fairgrounds, is the largest public fund-raiser for the Westport Shellfish Propagation Fund. And while it usually draws a big crowd every October, Westport Marine Services Director Chris Leonard said he hopes moving it to August will bring an even better turnout.

"We wanted to change it up just to have a bigger draw," Leonard said Monday. "This is a band (The Funkies) that a lot of people want to see, and we want to get more traffic, get more of the summer crowd and have it be a true community-oriented event.

The Funkies, also known as the Funky White Honkies, have been a fixture in the South Coast music scene for better than 30 years. Their Shellstock concert last year drew more than 400 people brought in $27,000 in profit and as always, 100 percent of that profit was used to purchase quahogs for the town's propagation program.

This year, Leonard said he and the rest of the harbormaster's office hope to spread 5,000 bushels of quahogs in town waters. So far, they've laid down about 450 bushels — "It's going to be a long summer!" he said.

Tickets are $35 and are already on sale. They can be purchased at www.eventbrite.com, and at retailers throughout Westport. The show runs from 3 to 7 p.m., with the band going on at 4 p.m.
