Shannon Grace Marks, Little Compton

Posted

Shannon Grace Marks was born on March 22, 1987 in Providence and was raised in Little Compton. She passed away peacefully on May 31, 2019, from complications due to brain cancer. Her beloved siblings, Pat and Cecilia, her mother Karen and her father Andrew were by her side.

Shannon attended Wilbur McMahon School and later went on to graduate from Middletown High School early through their CCRI Partnership Program. She transferred to the University of Rhode Island, where she received a Bachelor of Arts with a major in English. Shannon garnered many literary awards while attending URI, and contributed her writing to their arts magazine The Independent Scribe. She was also frequently published in The Witches' Almanac, where she provided insight into a vast array of engrossing subjects.

Shannon displayed a sharp wit and passion for language from an early age. A true wordsmith, she unpretentiously found delight in using obscure or unusual vocabulary in her everyday interactions. Shan brought her enthusiasm and talent to any endeavor she took on. She was a hard worker, and showcased her curiosity, creativity and intelligence wherever she was. Whether she was inventing small-batch experimental ice-cream flavors or absolutely obliterating anyone who challenged her at Scrabble, she did everything with unique flair. She read voraciously, and ruminated on life's big questions in her philosophy club.

Shannon will be remembered for so, so much: her giant, hypnotic eyes, her courage and grace, her clever brilliance, her outrageous sense of humor, her vibrant sense of style and her devotion to all things small and furry.

She leaves behind her mother, Karen Marks of Burrillville; her father, Andrew Marks of Little Compton; her sister, Cecilia Marks, and her brother, Patrick Marks, of Little Compton; and her sweet old dog Truffle. She also leaves a large family of aunts, uncles and cousins.

A loyal and loving friend to many, Shannon touched the lives of anyone she met. Shannon's radiance was unparalleled, and her absence will be profoundly felt by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
