EAST PROVIDENCE — Approaching mid-morning Thursday, Oct 17, about a dozen areas in city were lacking electricity because of a power outages in the area due strong winds associated with an overnight storm known in meteorological circles as a “bomb cyclone.”
According to National Grid, there were 14 actual locations in East Providence without electrical service at 10:45 a.m. The largest cluster of customers lacking service, five, was concentrated on Pawtucket Avenue south just into the Riverside section of the city. The area included St. Mary Academy-Bay View and the Village Green residential complex.
Two others were near Wampanoag Trail, a couple off Bullocks Point Avenue, another pair in the center of city near Waterman Avenue, and three more near Roger Williams Avenue and, again, on Pawtucket Avenue north in Rumford.
In each section, per National Grid, 50 or fewer customers were affected.
National Grid determined early Thursday morning the weather was still too hazardous for its crews to address the situation. Constant high winds and extreme gusts made conditions untenable in its estimation.
Bay View opted to cancel school for the day. However, Silver Spring Elementary School, a few hundred yards north off Pawtucket Avenue, was open for classes despite lacking electricity at the start of the day. Power was restored there at around 9:15 a.m.
