PORTSMOUTH — A seven-year-old girl was struck by a car Sunday afternoon, June 23, while she was attempting to use a crosswalk to walk across East Main Road at Stubtoe Lane.

Police responded to the intersection shortly after 3:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian.

Police said they determined that Benjamin Manning, 19, was driving southbound on East Main Road when his vehicle struck and injured the girl in the crosswalk.

The girl was transported by the Portsmouth Fire Department to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence for apparent non-life-threatening injuries, according to police, who reported her in stable condition and recovering from her injuries.

During the investigation, a 21-year-old passenger in the vehicle was found to be in possession of an open container of alcohol, police said.

Mr. Manning consented to a field sobriety test and a preliminary breath test. As a result, it was determined he was not under the influence of alcohol when this accident occurred, police said.

Mr. Manning was cited for “Right of Way in Crosswalk” and “Presence of Alcoholic Beverage while Operating a Motor Vehicle.” 

The Portsmouth Police Accident Reconstruction team was called to the scene to investigate.

At the time of the accident, the St. Barnabas Parish Festival was taking place, just south of the intersection on the east side of East Main Road.
