RWU students to help further beautify Bristol community garden

Posted

On Saturday, March 23, Roger Williams University students and Friends of Tom’s Grove will join forces once again to further beautify “Tom’s Grove”.

Last spring, a new and organic vegetable garden became part of a learning landscape which is nestled in a little grove on the premises of Benjamin Church Manor and the Bristol Housing Authority. The overall project, entitled “Tom’s Grove Memorial Garden,” has been in the works since 2022, when a few outdoor-minded seniors came up with the idea of starting a healthy, organic garden not only to enjoy growing fresh vegetables for a healthier lifestyle, but to embrace the opportunity to become more active.

The garden has since grown in interest, and with the continued help of the students on the Community Partners program, the garden will increase by adding four more boxes, totaling 26 in all, which were made not only with the help of the students, but volunteers from Herreshoff Marine Museum and local family members. Last year, the group raised $10,745 solely from donations and grant awards.

This year, together they will build a “Garden House” complete with a small patio with some flowers and picnic tables for social gatherings and frequent garden meetings. Some time soon, they hope to add a small greenhouse and pergola.

The group has also worked with the Science Department at the university through the efforts of Dr. Jennifer Pearce, who encouraged her students to take part in the efforts. The organization has received a great deal of support and recognition, which is greatly appreciated by all.

If anyone would like to become a part of this community project by supporting their efforts, donations can be sent to: Friends of Tom’s Grove, 1014 Hope St., Apt. AA-3, Bristol, RI 02809. The organization is a nonprofit and will gladly offer recognition for any donations that support it. The goal for fundraising this year is $18,000.
