PAWTUCKET — Elmwood’s Chris Guzman led his team with a fine pitching effort and some timely hitting to beat Rumford for the Rhode Island Little League Junior Division Baseball All Star state championship, 9-2, on Thursday night, July 28, at Pine View's Tomlinson Complex.
Guzman helped himself out before he even threw a pitch with an RBI single to score James Durante for the game’s first run in the first inning. He then hit a home run in the third inning as Elmwood broke the game open and scored five runs to take an 8-0 lead.
Rumford starter Sam Stone struggled with the strike zone walking two in the first and three in the third. Brandon Landry came on in relief and gave up a run in the fifth inning.
Landry and Nate Bettencourt scored for Rumford in the fifth to make it 9-2.
Elmwood advances to the Junior League Baseball East Regional Tournament, August 5-10, in Freehold Township, N.J.
