Robert Hanson Randall, 88, of Bristol, Rhode Island, died peacefully at home Sunday, June 14, 2020.
Born June 1932 in Providence, Rhode Island, to Hellen Hanson LeClair and Elmer Randall, Bob graduated from Colt Memorial High School in the Class of 1951. He went on to serve in the Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955, maintaining airplanes carrying the atomic bomb, with tours in Morocco, Japan, and the South Pacific.
Bob returned to Rhode Island after leaving the Navy to marry Barbara Lord Randall of Providence, Rhode Island, with whom he had two sons, Eric H. Randall and Bruce D. Randall.
Bob spent most of his career at Pratt & Whitney in Connecticut as a metallurgist manufacturing airplane engines, including the indirect atomic engine. His work included projects for the Atomic Energy Commission and the Department of Defense’s Manned Aircraft Nuclear Propulsion Program, for which he held a Q clearance.
Upon retirement, Bob co-owned C&M Marine and lived out his dream to return to the water running tug boats up and down the East Coast.
Bob is also remembered as a resident of Prudence Island, and a crew member on the Prudence Island Ferry until he was no longer physically able, in his late seventies.
Bob died peacefully, hours after his wife of twenty-two years, Betsey Borden Randall, at their home on High Street, surrounded by family. Bob will be remembered as a gregarious character, the ‘mayor’ of High Street, and a friend to all.
Bob was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara Lord Randall (of Providence, R.I.), and second wife, Betsey Borden Randall (of Swansea, Mass.). He is survived by his two sons, Eric Randall (of Goffstown, N.H.) and Bruce Randall (of Tiverton, R.I.), and three step-childre,n Merrilyn Rinkel (of Middletown, R.I.), Emerson Colwell (of Old Lyme, Conn.) and Nancy Taché (of Bristol, R.I.). He is survived by three grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren. He will be missed by all who came to know his fun-loving personality.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Herreshoff Marine Museum in memory of Robert Hanson Randall.
