EAST PROVIDENCE — Top-seeded and first place during the regular season, the Riverside Post 10 entry into the Rhode Island Elite 19-20 Junior Baseball League decisively claimed the state title with a two-game sweep of Upper Deck-Cumberland Post 14/88 in the final series.
The locals won both ends of a doubleheader Friday night, Aug. 14, at Pierce Field to win the title. The final was played under a best-of-three series format. A third game, if necessary would have been played over the weekend.
Riverside shut out second-place and No. 2 seed Upper Deck, 8-0, in Friday's opener, then secured the championship with a 12-7 victory in the night cap.
Post 10 teammates Elijah Barber and Brandon Landry shared playoff Most Valuable Player honors.
Riverside went 4-0 in the postseason, following victories over Scituate 1 and Gershkoff-Cranston in the quarterfinals and semis, respectively.
For the summer, Post 10 compiled a 15-2-1 record. The state-wide Elite League was implemented due to the COVID-19 virus and after the national American Legion Baseball governing body decided not to formally sanction competition because of the pandemic.
