Richard A. Durot, 79, Bristol

Richard A. Durot, 79, of Bristol, passed away on May 27, 2016 at the Grace Barker Nursing Home in Warren.

He was the son of the late Marcel and the late Eva (Berard) Durot. He was the beloved husband of the late Joan Reed, and is survived by three step children — John, Bill and Chrissie Reed. He is also survived by four sons, Guy Durot and his wife Tori of West Palm Beach, Fla., Jon Durot of Boston, Chris Durot Lowis and his wife Morgan of Bristol, and David Durot and his wife Kathy of Bristol. He was predeceased by a fifth son, Richard Durot.

He is survived by an older brother, Marcel Durot and his wife Charlotte of Chicago, Il. He is survived by four grandchildren and five step grandchildren. He is also survived by a former spouse, Sonia Lowis Wilson, of Newport.

Richard was born in Newton, Mass., and attended Georgetown University in Washington, DC, but left after his freshman year to be closer to home to help his mother care for his father, who was ill. He graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., and then graduated from Officer’s Candidate School in Newport, and served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy for three years. Richard was a stockbroker in Boston and commuted from Bristol to Beacon Hill for more than 25 years. Besides his family and many horses, dogs and cats, Richard also enjoyed sailing, politics and family visits in Europe.

Funeral Services will be private. Donations may be made to the Bristol Animal Shelter, 10 Minturn Farm Road, Bristol, RI 02809.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
