Rescheduled (and pared down) Santo Cristo feast this weekend

Posted

The Coronavirus pandemic  prevented St. Elizabeth Church from holding their Santo Cristo feast in June. Not to disrupt the tradition, they have organized a shorter and different program, but one that still includes some traditional favorites.

Through Friday, Sept. 25:
There will be a Novena everyday starting at 6 p.m. People are able to come, respecting social distancing and wearing face masks or can follow from home through the live streaming on the Church's Facebook page.

Sunday, Sept. 27:
There will be a mass at 1 p.m. in honor of Santo Cristo. After mass, the image of Santo Cristo will come out of the church entrance with a brief blessing of the Blessed Sacrament. There will not be a
procession.

During this weekend there will be food for sale for takeout only.

Saturday, Sept. 26 from 3 to 9 p.m.:
Sandwiches & malassadas will be sold.

7 p.m.: Live auction of animals, both for Santo Cristo and the United Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit & Holy Trinity Committee

Sunday, Sept. 27:
Malassadas will be sold 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sandwiches will be sold noon to 5 p.m.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
