Rabble-Rousers: Fascinating Women in Rhode Island’s History

Posted

The Rhode Island Historical Society will join the Cumberland Public Library on Wednesday, November 18th at 6:30 pm for a fun and inspiring romp through Rhode Island’s history.

Using images from the Rhode Island Historical Society collections and sharing the stories of amazing women from our state’s past, Jennifer Galpern and Rebecca Valentine will explore the stories of fascinating women who shaped Rhode Island's history.

This talk covers the four centuries since Rhode Island's founding and will introduce us to women like Sissieretta Jones, a concert singer who toured around the world and even performed for Her Royal Majesty, Queen Victoria of England. Love Haven Bros food truck? It was Ann- a female member of the family- that made it happen.

And, we are not just discussing the nice girls this evening either. Meet Dinah Sisson who used a smear campaign to make waves through Newport’s African American community in the 18th century. Meet these ladies and other ordinary and extraordinary women we are proud to call Rhode Islanders!

This program will take place on Zoom. A link will be sent to participants on the afternoon of the event. Registration is required.
