Locals finish up with home game at Pierce

EAST PROVIDENCE — The Riverside Post 10 Junior Division entry into the Rhode Island 19-20 Elite Baseball League entered its regular season finale with a 10-2-1 record and with at least second place in the standings secured.

The locals went 2-0-1 over the last week as they readied to face Scituate 1 Tuesday night, Aug. 11, at Pierce Field to complete their regular season. First pitch is at 5:30 p.m.

Last week
Riverside defeated the same Scituate team, 5-0, Wednesday night, Aug. 5. Jack McKnight was the winning pitcher, going five shutout innings on the mound. Brandon Landry finished off the win with two spotless frames.

Friday evening, Aug. 7, the locals defeated Gershkoff-Cranston, 13-4, in the first game of a split bill doubleheader at Pierce, then played Warwick to a 5-5 tie in a game called after six innings due to the complex curfew.

This week
Riverside returned to action Monday, Aug. 10, with a 4-3 win over North Providence/Smithfield at Smithfield High School. McKnight started on the mound, threw three innings of one hit, shutout ball. Jacob Palumbo threw two innings, allowing two hits and two runs. Later with the hosts threatening in the sixth, Brandon Landry allowed a game-tying double, but the locals went ahead in the top of the seventh and he eventually ended the game with the potential tying and winning runs on base by striking out the final two hitters.

In top of seventh, Billy Roche led off with a deep shot to left center for a double. Eli Barber moved him to third on infield single. Ryan Heatherton was up next, delivering a sacrifice fly to right to plate Roche with what proved the deciding run.

Riverside’s other runs were scored by Kyler Lorenz in first, Jacob Palumbo in third after leadoff double and steal of home after Landry got himself caught in round down at first and by Grayson Sparr, who singled and moved to second on an error, then to third on a wild pitch and came around on RBI single by Matt McDuff.

Correction
McDuff was pictured sliding into home plate for Post 10 during a recent game against Upper Deck-Cumberland. A late addition to the squad, he was incorrectly identified in the photo caption, which appeared in the August 6 print edition of The Post.
