PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth High School’s Colby Fahrney had already run in the 4x200-meter relay race and had just set a personal-best time (7.08 seconds) in the 55-meter sprint.

He proved he still had something left in his legs, however, at Saturday’s Class B indoor track championships at the the Providence Career & Technical Academy.

Chariho’s Perry Sabourin was the top seed going into the long jump event. After three jumps in the trials and three jumps in the finals, he was in first place with a best leap of 20 feet, 4 inches.

Fahrney was in second place after two jumps, with a best effort of 20 feet. He put everything together on his last attempt, however. and soared 20 feet, 8 inches for the victory.

“He's put a lot of work in this season to get to this point. The school record is 21 feet, 3.5 inches Marcus Sandoval, 2011,” said head coach Shaun Horgan. “He’s hoping to surpass that at the state meet. I'm looking forward to a great meet out of him next Saturday. He's ready to go.”

Portsmouth placed sixth out of 10 teams at Saturday’s meet.

Mr. Horgan also singled out the performance of Kaden Kluth, who ran on the 4x800 relay at the beginning of the meet in the hopes of helping the Patriots place top three. 

“He put in a great race. However, two of our other legs had been out all week with the flu and were not able to pull it off. Kaden also finished third in the 1,000. It was a close race from the gun; he just missed second place by two-10ths.

Brady Cranson finished third in the high jump with a best effort of 5 feet, six inches. Ben Chase finished third in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9 minutes, 20 seconds.
