PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth High’s cross-country teams didn’t take any medals home from Saturday’s state meet at Ponaganset High School, but some runners put up some impressive times.

Senior Ben Chase placed 16th overall on the 3.1-mile course, clocking a time of 16:27, a lifetime best for him. His performance earned his Third Team All-State honors and qualified him for the New England Championships Saturday in Manchester, Conn.

The other local finishers among the boys were:

• Kaden Kluth, 63rd place, 17:26

• Brennan Seibert, 64th, 17:27

• Jeff Brady, 75th, 17:37

• Declan Foster, 92nd, 18:04

• Joe Hook, 96th, 18:10

• Tanner McHugh, 110th, 18:28

The boys finished 10th out of the 19 teams that qualified.  “We finished 10th last year as well, but we also lost three scoring members from that team,” said head coach Shaun Horgan. “Our times this year were much faster than last year, and each athlete ran a lifetime best on Saturday.  They are a tough and gritty team. I'm particularly pleased with the leadership from my seniors, Ben, Brennan and Declan. It's been a great season with these kids, I'm really proud of them.”

The PHS girls’ team came into the meet as the two-time defending champions, but had lost several of its top runners who graduated in the spring. They finished 11th as a team.

The top local runner for the girls was Abby Gilpin, who ran a personal-best 20:04.92, good enough for 24th overall.

The other local finishers among the girls were:

• Sabrina Leary, 31st place, 20:38.31

• Kitty Damon, 57th, 21:26.90

• Kiera Foster, 71st, 21:52.13

• Ryan McNeilly, 95th, 22:30.28

The girls’ head coach, Jeff Rose, was recently named a Rhode Island Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations for the 2018-19 school year.
