Portsmouth Police: Driver left scene after striking pedestrian

PORTSMOUTH — Here are some highlights from the Portsmouth Police reports from over the past week.

Thursday, Dec. 26

Irene M. Nerney, 85, of 103 Oakland Ave., Pawtucket, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident after she struck a pedestrian on Stringham Road shortly before 4 p.m., according to police. The pedestrian was treated for a minor injury and released from the hospital, police said. Tiverton Police were advised to be on the lookout for the vehicle and made a traffic stop in that town. Portsmouth Police later went to Tiverton to take custody of Ms. Nerney.

Veanna Ayala, 31, of 2368 East Main Road, was charged with possession of a controlled substance after her vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation on East Main Road at Turnpike Avenue at about 1:10 p.m. Police said narcotics were found in the vehicle, leading to Ms. Ayala’s arrest. 

Friday, Dec. 27

Manuel A. Nieves, 34, of 32 Ward St., Warren, was charged with being a fugitive from justice after his vehicle was pulled over for a traffic violation on West Main Road at Freeborn Street shortly before 2 p.m. Police said there was a full extradition warrant out of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. for Mr. Nieves’ arrest.

Stephen P. O’Toole, 44, of 75 Baldwin St., Pawtucket, was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense) after being pulled over for a traffic violation on West Main Road in front of Melville School at about 11:30 p.m. 

Saturday, Dec. 28

Matthew C. Tapper, 24, of 42 Babbitt St., Fairhaven, Mass., was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense) after being stopped for a traffic violation on West Main Road at Turkey Hill at about 12:45 a.m. Police also cited Mr. Tapper for refusing to submit to a chemical test.

Sunday, Dec. 29

Christopher M. Perry, 31, of 969 West Main Road, Middletown, was charged with fraudulent use of credit cards after he was arrested by Middletown Police on a Portsmouth warrant. Portsmouth Police traveled to Middletown to take custody of Mr. Perry at about 1 p.m.
