Portsmouth High girls sweep in holiday hoops tourney

PORTSMOUTH — Senior forward Haley Alves scored 17 points and went nine for 10 from the free throw line as the Portsmouth High School varsity girls’ basketball team beat Rogers on Wednesday, 49-37.

The game was the second of two the Patriots played during the non-league Barrington Boosters Holiday Tournament at Barrington High School Tuesday and Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Portsmouth defeated Juanita Sanchez Complex, 55-51.

Here are some upcoming games for the lady Patriots. All contests start at 7 p.m.

• Monday, Jan. 4: at South Kingstown High School

• Wednesday, Jan. 6: hosting Westerly High School

• Friday, Jan. 8: hosting Barrington High School

• Tuesday, Jan. 12: at St. Mary Academy-Bay View

• Thursday, Jan. 14: hosting Cranston High School West

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
