PORTSMOUTH — Four members of the Portsmouth High School girls’ track team earned All-American honors when they set a new Rhode Island record in the distance medley relay.

Nikki Merrill, Sabrina Leary, Olive Allen and Elizabeth Sullivan set the mark while competing in the New Balance National Outdoor Championships at Aggie Stadium in Greensboro, N.C. on Sunday. Olive is a Little Compton resident who attends PHS.

The distance medley relay is a race in which the first athlete runs 1,200 meters (three laps), the second members runs 400 meters (one lap), the third athlete runs 800 meters (two laps), and the anchor runs 1,600 meters (four laps).

The relay foursome placed fourth in the event, earning an All-American title and setting a new state record in the process. Their time of 11:56.41 beat the previous state record set by La Salle Academy in 2013.
