PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School boys’ varsity indoor track team won its first regular season meet at the Providence Career & Technical Academy on Thursday, Dec. 15.
The team defeated South Kingstown, 71-36; Coventry, 80-24; and Exeter-West Greenwich, 90-12.
Sean Gray and Aidan Chen each won two events. Gray was victorious in both the 1,500- and 1,000-meter runs, posting times of 4:43 and 3:01.2, respectively.
Chen took first place in the 300-meter dash (38.38 seconds) and the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches).
Chris Vachon won the 3,000-meter run in a time of 10:15, while Landon Rodrigues came in first in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.61 seconds. The boys’ 4x200-meter relay team of Nate DeConto, Nick Spaner, Oliver Tibbetts, and Christian Claytor won their event in a time of 1:40.5.
The previous Saturday, Dec. 10, the varsity team also won the Northern/Southern Division Injury Fund.
On Saturday, Dec. 17, the team competed in the Rhode Island Track and Field Coaches Association (RITCA) Invite, a statewide invitational. There were some solid performances from the boys, including:
• The 4x400-meter relay team of Oliver Tibbetts, Maciej Tabak, Nikolai Loyola, and Aidan Chen came in third place with a time of 3:44.5.
• Nikolai Loyola took fifth place in the high jump with a best effort of 5 feet, 10 inches.
• Landon Rodrigues ran an 8.51-second 55-meter hurdles, good enough for fifth place.
• Aidan Chen came in fifth in the 300-meter run, posting a time of 38.64 seconds.
• The 4x200-meter relay team of Nate DeConto, Nick Spaner, Oliver Tibbetts, and Landon Rodrigues came in fifth with a time of 1:38.99.
