PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth Imaging Center at 69 Turnpike Ave. has acquired what Newport Hospital is calling the only open MRI machine in Greater Newport County.

This final instillation, the first of its kind in the Lifespan Health System, rounds out a new suite of medical imaging equipment available to patients.

Newport Hospital’s open MRI is the Oasis 1.2T, the strongest high field open MRI scanner. According to the hospital, it offers the patient comfort with its unique open gantry for a spacious feeling. It has an unobstructed view, unobstructed access from all sides, and soothing ambient lighting. Additionally, the space features tranquil seasonal landscapes throughout the room, offering patients a relaxing view during their imaging experience.

This open MRI is effective for a variety of procedures including orthopedic imaging, neurological imaging, vascular imaging, abdomen and pelvis imaging, and face and neck imaging, according to the hospital.

“Providing a comprehensive suite of medical imaging options for patients on Aquidneck Island and in the east bay to meet their needs is just one way we are delivering health with care,” said Newport Hospital President Crista F. Durand. “It is a testament to the patient-centric focus of our talented medical imaging team that Newport Hospital has the only open MRI machine in Greater Newport County and the only Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence in Rhode Island and in South Coast Massachusetts.” (Last year the hospital was designated a Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.)

“We are delighted to add this new technology to our diagnostic and interventional imaging procedures,” added Christopher Monteiro, director of imaging cardiology operations and radiology administration and support at Newport Hospital. “It offers greater comfort for the patient with its extra space, alleviating the feeling of claustrophobia, which for some, can make these types of scans difficult. It delivers high performance, which is a priority, and its design allows for easier communication between patient, radiologists, and technologists.”

According to the hospital, the community was generous in helping to fund the acquisition of the machine, as well as other enhancements. More than $750,000 was raised in 2021 to help fund five pieces of new equipment.

In addition to the open MRI, a 64-slice CT scanner was installed in Portsmouth — the same technology used at Newport Hospital. Last fall, three 3D tomosynthesis mammography units were installed between the two locations. This final instillation rounds out a new suite of medical imaging equipment between the Newport Hospital and Portsmouth Imaging Center locations.
