PORTSMOUTH — This one was nearly over as soon as it started.

The Patriots did everything right on both sides of the ball during the first half of Friday night’s home games against Woonsocket, taking a 41-0 lead as the whistle blew to end the second quarter.

After that, the team could afford to take its foot off the pedal a bit, and cruised to a 48-16 victory over the Villa Novans in the Division I matchup.

Portsmouth’s normally slow-starting offense came out blazing, with quarterback Ben Hurd completing a 40-plus-yard pass play to Gavin Bicho on the first play from scrimmage before pitching it to Marcus Evans on the next play for a 12-yard run into the end zone.

The next time the Patriots had the ball, Hurd connected with Evans for a 75-yard TD pass on the first play. Bicho caught a 9-yard TD Pass on the third offense series for Portsmouth.

Hurd threw for more than 120 yards and ran for 105 more in the first half alone.

Next up for the Patriots is a 3 p.m. road game on Saturday, Oct. 30, against Bishop Hendricken.
