A Providence man is facing multiple charges in connection with a series of recent break-ins in Barrington.
On Tuesday morning, Jan. 30, the Barrington Police Department Detective Bureau and members of the Providence Police Department Detective Bureau arrested Joel Reis, 39, outside his home in Providence.
Barrington Police said Reis is responsible for house breaks in the area of Washington Road, Nayatt Road and Rumstick Road, as well as on the East Side of Providence.
Barrington Police charged Reis with three counts of unlawful breaking and entering of a dwelling house, and Providence Police charged him with two counts of the same offense. Reis was arraigned in Sixth Division District Court on Wednesday morning.
Barrington Police Chief Michael Correia said the arrest was the result of a two-month joint investigation with the Providence and Barrington Police Departments. Chief Correia said Reis has a lengthy criminal record.
Chief Correia said Providence Police also charged Reis with two counts of receiving stolen goods. Reis was allegedly in possession of a bag of stolen jewelry when police arrested him outside his home on Tuesday morning. Chief Correia said some of the jewelry had been stolen from a Barrington home. Police were later able to return the stolen jewelry to the Barrington resident.
Barrington Police also confirmed that Reis was charged in the break-in of a Nayatt area home where a safe was stolen. That safe, police said, held an urn that contained a deceased child’s remains. Police said the ashes were not recovered.
Bail for Reis was set at $20,000 with surety for each count, police said. Reis was presented as a probation violator in Superior Court.
"The persistence and dedication of all detectives involved is to be commended," Chief Correia said.
"The Barrington Police Department thanks all members of the Barrington community who provided assistance and evidence leading to the arrest of Joel Reis.
“Please continue to be vigilant. The safest communities are those that work together with their police department."
