The Rhode Island Department of Health notified police about a 92-year-old Barrington man who was attacked by a raccoon Monday, Oct. 5.

The man told officials that he was walking out to get his mail when a raccoon came up behind him and attacked his leg. The man said he turned around when he felt the bite and used his cane to fight off the raccoon.

The man told officials the raccoon did not look sick. According to the report, the bite did not break the skin — it bruised his leg and did not tear his pants. The RI Department of Health said the man did not need to get a rabies shot, according to the report. The man lives on County Road.
