Officials search Barrington River for bridge jumper

Motorist reports seeing someone jump off Barrington River Bridge Monday night

Posted

A team of first responders searched sections of the Barrington River on Monday night and Tuesday morning, Sept. 2 and 3, after a motorist reported seeing someone jump from the bridge.

According to Barrington Fire Chief Gerald Bessette, a motorist called the station at about 7:30 p.m. after she witnessed a person leap from the north side of the bridge into the water at Police Cove.

The fire department launched the Marine 1 rescue boat, while a number of other agencies provided assistance, including the U.S. Coast Guard, and Bristol, Warren, Cranston, Warwick and East Providence. Chief Bessette said Warwick, Cranston and the Coast Guard were soon after called to a separate incident in another part of Narragansett Bay. Officials from Barrington, Warren and Bristol continued the search until about 10:30 p.m. on Monday night.

Chief Bessette said the witness's account appeared to credible.

"There was no reason not to believe her," he said.

Marine 1 was back on the river on Tuesday morning continuing to search for the alleged jumper. The search, said Chief Bessette, stretches from the Warren River north to the area of the Barrington River behind the town hall.

During an interview on Tuesday morning, Chief Bessette said there had been no missing persons reports filed.
