Attempts being made to alleviate congestion at Broadway location

EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence Police Department and the office of Mayor Bob DaSilva announced a series of traffic changes in the center of the city in an effort to alleviate congestion at the on-ramp to Interstate 195 created by the Washington Bridge fiasco.

The following changes are expected to be in effect either by Tuesday, Jan. 9, or shortly thereafter:

As of Tuesday, between the hours of 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m., Grosvenor Avenue west bound at Broadway will be right turn only. Drivers are asked to adhere to the do not block the box signage and road markings placed at the Broadway and Grosvenor intersection. A traffic control officer will be in the intersection of Broadway and Grosvenor controlling the traffic flow and preventing motorists from blocking the box. Motorists are asked to utilize the Henderson Bridge for access to points west.

Additionally, south on North Hull Street from Grosvenor will be for residents only, which will be marked and manned by a patrol officer.

Warren Avenue westbound from Slocum Street/I-195 East off-ramp will be converted to two lanes going west towards Broadway. One lane will be right turn only towards the 195 west on-ramp. The other lane will be for left turn or through traffic only.RIDOT will be relining the road.

A traffic control officer will be in the intersection of Broadway and Warren Avenue controlling the traffic flow and preventing motorists from blocking the box.

Markings and signs will be placed at Orchard Street at Broadway reminding motorists to not block that intersection.

Officials also asked the public for "patience...We understand it runs thin occasionally. There is nothing we can do to completely alleviate traffic. On a good day when all on-ramps and all lanes of 195 were open there was rush hour traffic. Now, at times, especially when there is a crash or incident on 195, there is simply no where to put vehicles waiting to get on to the highway.

"We will continually assess and do our best to try to make things better. Thank you and soon enough this will be a distant memory."
