O'Dell: Committee member must be adept at building consensus

Posted

I have been serving on the school committee now for almost 20 years, casting more than 2,400 votes. Most of those votes turned out as I had hoped, but there were a few that were disappointing.

Whether they were routine or groundbreaking; all were important. Yes, there were two or three I wish I could do over again, but that does not diminish my sense of pride and satisfaction knowing the results overall have left a positive mark on education.

A good committee member has two tools at his disposal: his vote and his ability to persuade. The latter is vital because a vote that does not carry the majority accomplishes nothing.
