Holy Angels Church cancels chicken barbecue

The annual chicken barbecue at Holy Angels Church has been canceled. The event had been scheduled for Thursday, July 12, but low ticket sales forced officials to cancel it. Anyone who had already purchased tickets for the barbecue can get a refund by calling 245-4707. Holy Angels Church will hold its popular Italian Food Festival on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 5 to 8:30 p.m., in the Church Hall. 

Coaching vacancies at Barrington High School

Officials at Barrington High School are looking for a girls ice hockey coach and a middle school wrestling coach. The hockey team is a co-op, with players from Barrington, Mt. Hope and Portsmouth. Anyone interested in coaching either team should contact George Finn, the director of athletics and student activities at Barrington High School, at 529-1117 or at finng@barringtonschools.org. Applicants can apply on the Barrington School District website under "Employment Opportunities."

Summer Concert Series continues on Sunday

The Barrington Summer Concert Series enjoyed beautiful weather for its first show of the season on Sunday, July 8. The next show is planned for Sunday, July 15 at Latham Park, and will feature the band The New 40. The concert starts at 6 p.m. Following is the schedule for shows this summer: Becky Chace Band, at Barrington Beach, on July 22; Boston Premier, at Latham Park, on July 29; Brass Attack, at Latham Park, on Aug. 5; Detroit Breakdown, at Barrington Beach, on Aug. 12; and Roger Ceresi's Allstarz, at Latham Park, on Aug. 19. All the concerts are free and open to the public.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
