The superb unbeaten start to the 2026 season for the Mt. Hope High School boys' soccer club came to a close last Tuesday night, Sept. 29, as the Huskies suffered their first defeat to date, a 2-0 setback to guest Tiverton in a Division II outing at Roger Williams University in Bristol.

Mt. Hope saw its mark move to 5-1-3 overall while the Tigers improved to 5-4-2.

Girls' soccer
The MHHS girls' soccer team played visiting Smithfield to a 2-2 draw in a Division I contest Tuesday night, Sept. 29, at RWU.

Sarah Nencka netted both of the goals for the Huskies, whose record moved to 3-4-3 overall. Emma Goglia assisted on one of the tallies. Keeper Moira Ware was credited with three saves.

Mt. Hope returned to action Friday afternoon, Oct. 2, when the Huskies welcomed South Kingstown to RWU.

Girls' tennis
Kaia Brown picked up the lone point for the MHHS girls' tennis team in the Huskies' 6-1 loss to host North Providence on September 29. Brown was a 7-5, 6-3 victor at No. 1 singles.

Emma Sorrentino and Avery Walsh suffered tough defeats at the third and fourth spots, respectively. Sorrentino fell 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) and 2-6. Walsh lost 6-1, 4-6 and 2-6. The third doubles team of Maeve Clark and Kayla Sousa
also played a competitive match, falling 4-6 and 3-6.

Cross country
The MHHS cross country teams hosted their first meet of the 2026 season, dropping decisions to visiting Barrington and Moses Brown in a couple of Metropolitan Division outings Wednesday, Sept. 30, over the 5K course at Bristol Town Beach.

The Huskies lost 15-50 to the neighboring Eagles and 18-39 to the Quakers in the girls' portion of the afternoon. Barrington also beat Moses Brown, 17-46.

Kara Pisasale paced the locals, running 12th overall in a time of 21 minutes, 54 seconds. Carey Gill led a 1-2-3 Eagles' sweep with a winning time of 19:48.

Evelyn Towers was next in for the Huskies with a time of 22:13 followed by Raegan McGinn with a 22:21, Abby St. Pierre with a 23:35 and Jourdan Cicchinelli with a 24:11 to round out the five scoring runners.

The MHHS boys fell by similar scores, 15-50 to Barrington and 17-42 to Moses Brown. The Eagles added a win over the Quakers, 17-46.

And likewise, Colby Napolitano won the race in 16:41 as the Eagles swept the top three places. Jacob Lopes was the first Husky to finish, running 16th overall in 18:19.

Alexander Deal was right behind with a time of 18:44 to lead the rest of the Mt. Hope scorers followed by Noah Rozen with a 19:10, Chase Aiksnoras with a 19:27 and Adam Cobb with a 19:33.

Girls' volleyball
MHHS and Barrington also met on the girls' volleyball court on September 30, the host Eagles defeating the Huskies 3-1 in a Division I match. Barrington won by the scores of 25-19, 25-23, 13-25 and 25-12.

Margaret Thorp had 10 kills, three service aces and seven digs for the Huskies. Setter Hayden Sylvia assisted on 13 points and had an ace. Stella Hill added five kills, three aces and a pair of blocks.
