The Mt. Hope High School Unified Basketball League season is well underway. The Huskies made their 2025 debut against Barrington then hosted Middletown before welcoming Portsmouth to Bristol last week when Mt. Hope earned a 70-64 victory.

The rest of the schedule for the Huskies included March 25 in Newport against Rogers, at Tiverton on April 1, at home for Barrington a rematch against the Eagles on Mt. Hope Senior Day April 8 at 4 p.m. then the regular season finale for the locals on April 22 in Middletown.

The 2025 Mt. Hope High Unified roster includes athletes Desmond Blackbeard, Austin Durette, Isabella Flaherty, Paige Gauthier, Rehan Khan, Caiden Mortensen, Charlotte Mowery, Joseph Pedulla and Susan Sylvia along with partners Maci Catalano-Shallcross, Michael Scolaro, Harminey Sylvia and Lylah Vargas. Thea Brum and Tom Fullen are the coaches.

Unified Hoops, which brings together Special Needs student-athletes with their peers from the general population, is a program co-sponsored by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League and Special Olympics-Rhode Island. The RIIL and SORI also co-sponsor the counterpart Unified Volleyball League each fall.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
