Mt. Hope gymnasts heading to the national stage

Posted

Three of the most accomplished scholar-athletes in the history of Mt. Hope High School will be on their way to the Senior National High School Gymnastics Championships in Ft. Meyers, Fla., May 17 and 18.

Eighteen-year-old seniors Jayme Foreman, Katie Quinn and Meghan Alegria Oliver have enjoyed a remarkable high school career, highlighted by another state championship a few months ago.

“These three girls are exceptional student-athletes,” said Mt. Hope High athletic director Christy Belisle. “They have worked extremely hard throughout the four years they have been members of our gymnastics team. We couldn’t be more proud of them.”

Jayme Foreman, daughter of Iris and Stephen Foreman of Bristol, excelled on the balance beam, where she earned All-State honors and a sixth-place overall finish at the state meet. She’s been a four-time New England qualifier and a three-year Highest Honors Academic All-Star. She’s also a member of the National Honor Society.

She will attend the University of Georgia in the fall.

A floor exercise and balance beam standout, Katie Quinn gained first-team All-State honors last year and second-team All-State recognition this year. She finished seventh at the state meet, and was a first team All-Division performer the past four years. She too is a Highest Honors student and National Honor Society member.

Like Jayme and Meghan, Katie takes part in club gymnastics year-round. She is the daughter of Kevin and Lisa Quinn of Bristol. She will be headed to Loyola University in Maryland this fall.

Meghan Oliver is one of the few female athletes in Mt. Hope High history to be named first team All-State in multiple sports.

A four-time, first-team All-Stater in gymnastics, Meghan is also a four-time, first-team All-Division selection and All-Stater in indoor and outdoor track, and a National Honor Society student. She finished third overall at the state meet, and eighth overall in gymnastics in the All-Around competition. She was also All-New England four times in track and gymnastics (vault, floor exercises, and balance beam) and the 55-meter hurdles state champion in indoor track.

Meghan is the daughter of Karen and Chris Cook of Bristol. She will be attending the University of West Virginia in the fall.

“She’s a true all-around champion,” said Ms. Belisle. “In fact, all three of these girls should be commended for their dedication and hard work throughout their careers.”

As Ms. Belisle pointed out, the Mt. Hope High gymnastics team went undefeated all four years that these three girls were members of the team, an unbelievable achievement.

“They were members of four state and division championship teams and four-time New England qualifiers,” she added, “They have a lot to be proud of.”

“These girls went 10-0 all four years of high school, making their collective record 40-0,” said Christy Belisle. “There have only been six state titles in the history of  Mt. Hope (1999, 2009, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019). These girls have been part of 4 our of six. That’s pretty amazing."

“As an AD, it’s is great to be part of a winning program and to serve true student-athletes like these young ladies. They are amazing ambassadors for our school and the larger community of Bristol and Warren.  When you realize they were perfectionists in the gym and work horses in the classroom, not just for themselves but for the betterment of the team, for purple and white, for their friendship spanning back to third grade, you get a true picture of what competitive sports in high school is all about and the benefits of public education.  I am extremely proud of what they have accomplished together with Coach Nicole Daniello, and can’t wait to see what they do in college and beyond.”
