EAST PROVIDENCE — East Providence Police announced the arrest of suspect in bank robbery earlier in the week in city.
The EPPD in conjunction with the Cranston, Franklin (Mass.), Walpole (Mass,), and Massachusetts State Police, announced the apprehension of Joseph Hickson, 36, of South Street Walpole, Mass., on Wednesday, May 29, a day after it is alleged he attempted a theft at the Washington Trust Bank on Newport Avenue in East Providence.
An investigation into the bank robbery continued after the East Providence Police learned of similar robberies in Cranston and Franklin, Mass. in recent weeks. The description of the suspect in the East Providence robbery matched the description in recent robberies in the region.
The information gathered during the investigation led to the identification and eventual arrest of Mr. Hickson. He was arrested on a warrant at the Plainridge Park Casino in Plainville, Mass.
In addition to the arrest, East Providence Police detectives, through the assistance of Walpole detectives, obtained and executed a search warrant at Mr. Hickson’s Walpole address, where evidence was located. Additionally, a search warrant was obtained and executed for the vehicle he had been suspected of using in the robberies. Evidence was also located in the vehicle. The search warrants were obtained and executed on Mr. Hickson’s residence and vehicle after his arrest.
Mr. Hickson is being held in Massachusetts as a Fugitive From Justice on the East Providence warrant of First Degree Robbery. Additional warrants will be forthcoming from the Cranston and Franklin Police Departments. The Federal Bureau of Investigations and the R.I. Attorney General’s Office also assisted on the case.
