Mary Jose Brum, 89, of Bristol

Mary Jose (Alves) Brum, 89, of Manchester Street passed away on Feb. 27, 2020, at home.

Born in Bristol, she was the daughter of the late Jose Alves Martins and Rufina Carreiro Alves.         

She is survived by her children, Anthony Brum and his wife Aiko of Hawaii, and Elizabeth Palumbo and her husband Steven of Bristol, and grandchildren, Christopher Brum, Kimberly D. Brum, Phillip Rose, Steven Palumbo Jr. and Nicholas Palumbo. She was the sister of Teresa Almeida and the late Joseph Alves Jr. and Rachel Carreiro.

Mrs. Brum was educated in Portugal and employed by Bristol Manufacturing and Roger Williams University before retiring.

Her funeral services were held Tuesday, March 3, from the George Lima Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Gilberto Orioli at St. Elizabeth’s Church. Liturgical readings were by Cynthia Alves and Cee Vallee.

The Prayer of the Faithful was read by Sherry Almeida, and the offertory gifts were presented by Duarte Carreiro and Breana Petrarca. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Steven Palumbo Jr., Nicholas Palumbo, Stephen Alves, John Alves, Jeff Carreiro and Kevin Moitoso.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
