Mary C. Cavallaro, 99, of Bristol

Mrs. Mary C. (Spagoni) Cavallaro, 99, of Benjamin Church Manor, Bristol, died Sunday, June 9, 2019, at her home. She was the wife of the late Joseph Cavallaro.

Born, raised and educated in New Bedford, Mass., she was a daughter of the late John and Domenica (Sparta) Spagoni.

During World War II, she worked at Cornell Dubilier Corp. main office and worked with the USO to organize activities. Later, she graduated from Massachusetts Academy of Cosmetology, worked as a hairdresser for 10 years, and eventually operated her own business in New Bedford until she married.

Her hobbies were cooking, and she loved to try new things. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Bristol and a member of the former Hope Circle, Daughters of Isabella.

She is survived by two sons, Michael A. Cavallaro of Riverside, and Joseph W. Cavallaro of Bridgewater, Mass.,  and a grandson, Kevin Cavallaro of Beverly, Mass. Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., Bristol, are Friday, June 14, 2019, at 10 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State St., Bristol.  Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
