Marie Catherine O’Connor, formerly of Barrington

Marie Catherine (Chellel) O’Connor, former resident of East Greenwich, Providence and Barrington, died peacefully on Monday, May 31, 2021 surrounded by her loving family.  

Daughter of the late Margaret Virginia Chellel (Roy) and Walter Joseph Chellel, former co-owner of Chellel’s Market, a fixture in Barrington for over 50 years. Wife of the late Lawrence M. O’Connor Jr.; devoted mother of Lawrence Michael O’Connor III of Huntington NY, his wife Kimberly, and loving grandmother of Ryan, Christopher and Michael. Sister Maureen Cummins (husband Eugene) of Warren, niece Catherine Cummins, nephew Michael Cummins (wife Michele) and their children Sean and Brayden. 

Born March 25, 1947 in Providence, Marie grew up in Barrington and was a graduate of Barrington High School. She attended Anna Maria College, earned a BA in Education from Barrington College and a Masters in Education from Rhode Island College.  

Marie was a devoted elementary school teacher for the East Providence School System for over 30 years. In retirement, she also worked as a part-time substitute teacher at Our Lady of Mercy School in East Greenwich and St. Peter School in Warwick. Marie was a member of the East Providence Education Association, East Bay and Rhode Island Retired Teachers’ Associations, and the National Education Association.

Visitation services were held at the Wilbur Romano Funeral Home, 615 Main Street, Warren on Thursday, June 3. A private family burial will be held at the Maria del Campo Cemetery in Barrington.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
