Maria Teresa Cassar, 68, of Bristol

Maria Teresa Cassar, 68, of Bristol, R.I., formerly of West Palm Beach, Fla., died, Monday, April 12, 2021, at Crestwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Warren.

Born in Sicily, Italy, she was the daughter of the late Gaetano and Josephine (Pulsiano) Cassar.

Mrs. Cassar had worked as a teachers aide for the South Kingstown School Department for many years, retiring in 2004. Maria was always an active member of her community with a passion for helping children. She was always helping people anyway she could.

She is survived by her son, Anthony Castillo and his wife Victoria of Bristol, R.I.; her daughter, Daniella Santiesteban and her husband Richard of Miami, Fla.; three sisters, Rosalie Sanfilippo of West Palm Beach, Fla., Lydia Imbriale of Long Island, N.Y., and Ceasarina Cussen of Long Island, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren, Elizabeth, Aidan, Michael, Melissa, Alice, Abel, Caden, and Evan.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, April 18, 2021, from 2 to 5 p.m. in Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Crestwood Patient Activities Fund, 568 Child St., Warren, RI, 02885.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
