Margarida Manteiga, 83, Bristol

Margarida (Tavares) Manteiga, 83, of Hamlet Court, passed away on Aug. 27 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Manuel Soares Manteiga.  

Born in Rosario de Lagoa, St. Michael, Azores, she was the daughter of the late Manuel August Tavares Carneiro and Mariana (dosReis) Carneiro. She was the mother of Jose M. Soares, Caetano A. Soares, Salomao R. Soares, Valtero R. Soares, Maria D. Soares, Susana R. Nazhevalin, Edgardo R. Soares, Emanuel R. Soares, Sandra M. Vieira and the late Olga Soares; grandmother of Monica Furtado, Filipe Soares, Cesar Soares, Fabio Soares, Rafael Soares, Sarah Soares, Catia Soares, Ruben Soares, Ashley Soares, Sabrina Soares, Ethan Soares, Makayla Soares, Andrew Soares, Justin Soares, Alexander Soares, Joshua Vieria, Stephanie Vieira; and great grandmother of Juliana Furtado, Anthony Soares, Dylan Soares, Jacob Soares and Lucas Soares. She was the sister of Teresa T. Rodrigues, Ana M. Tavares and Manuel A. Tavares. She was the grandmother of the late Jeffrey Vieira, who also passed away on Aug. 27. 

Mrs. Manteiga attended school in Portugal and worked for Robin Rug before retiring. 

The funeral services for Mrs. Manteiga and her grandson, Jeffrey, will be held Saturday, Sept. 3, 8 a.m. from the George Lima Funeral Home, 367 High St., with a Mass of Christian Burial, 9 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood St. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bristol.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
