Mandatory watering ban in Bristol County

Full ban in place through weekend, odd/even ban to follow

The Bristol County Water Authority has instituted a mandatory outdoor watering ban for this coming weekend, and following that instituting an odd/even watering ban for the foreseeable future.

The bans come as contractors prepare to start repairing the leaking East Bay Pipeline that runs from the Port of Providence to East Providence. With the commencement of work expected Monday, the authority has shut down the leaking pipeline and switched to a backup source in East Providence.

BCWA executive director Pam Marchand said Friday afternoon that higher than expected water demand in Barrington, Bristol and Warren led to the ban. The measure "is needed to protect the water system’s fire supply and prevent loss of pressure," she said.

Starting immediately and running through Monday, Sept. 23, all outside water usage except from hand-held watering cans is banned.

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 24, outdoor water use will be allowed on odd/even days based on street address. House addresses ending in an odd number can water on odd calendar days; addresses ending in an even number on even days).

Ms. Marchand added that depending on water consumption, BCWA officials may need to enforce bans throughout the construction period, which is anticipated to take eight weeks.

"We ask that customers also conserve indoor water consumptions throughout this time period," she said.
