A 56-year-old man drowned after rushing into the water off Narrows Point in Bristol in an attempt to help three teens caught in a strong current Wednesday afternoon.
On July 29, at approximately 2:40 p.m., Bristol EMS and Bristol Police were dispatched to the shoreline off Harrison Street for a report of a man who was pulled unresponsive from the water. It was further reported during the call that bystanders tried using CPR on the man before EMS arrived.
Bristol Police learned that Hoen Chin, age 56, from Providence, had traveled to Narrows Point with family and friends to spend time by the water. The location is an area Mr. Chin and family are familiar with and have frequented in the past.
As the day progressed, three juveniles, ages 13, 13 and 14, entered the water and began swimming off the shore of Narrows Point when they became caught in a strong rip current. It was reported to Bristol Police that Mr. Chin entered the water to assist the distressed swimmers when he became caught in the current and was swept under water. The three teens were able to make it back to shore.
After approximately 5 to 10 minutes, Mr. Chin was found in the water and pulled to shore by a bystander, to an area north of Narrows Point off of Harrison Street. CPR was immediately started by bystanders while police and EMS were contacted and responded.
Upon arriving on scene, Bristol Police and EMS took over life saving measures. Mr. Chin was subsequently transported to Rhode Island Hospital by Bristol Rescue, where he was pronounced deceased.
In a statement, Bristol Police extended thoughts and prayers to the Chin family.
