Little Compton beach closed due to high surf

No swimming allowed at South Shore Beach as Hurricane Gert kicks up big waves

Posted

The state  closed South Shore Beach in Little Compton to swimming Wednesday due to high surf kicked up by Hurricane Gert as it passes south of the state.

The surf at the beach was as high as six feet, much higher than usual, and sent waves crashing almost to the beach parking lot. Crowds packed the area to get a look at the waves, and some surfers were out to take advantage of the swells.

The high surf brings with it potentially deadly rip currents that cane sweep unsuspecting swimmers far out to sea, prompting the closure.

Massachusetts also closed nearby Horseneck Beach in Westport Wednesday afternoon.
