Letter: Youth football in Barrington — 50 years and counting!

To the editor:

I have always loved fall, the leaves, fire pits, the chill, and football.

I doubt most folks realize that 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Barrington Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading. Fifty years of summer conditioning, late practices, game days, and post game celebrations Sunday afternoon.

Although tackle football may be out of favor in Barrington, our championship cheerleaders keep our spirit alive.  I bet they are working hard regardless of the season.

Nothing brings a smile to my face more than driving past the flag football being played Haines Park on Sundays. We all owe the organizers, coaches, referees, and players a debt of gratitude this fall. They pulled it off like all those before them. I’m sure it wasn’t easy and took more than expected...but it’s worth it. After all, fall is the best time of your life!

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
