Letter: Writer’s attempt at satire about diversity falls flat

Posted

In his letter to the editor in the Oct. 22 issue, “Look at everything the Diversity group can accomplish,” Zachary Cooper attempts to poke fun at the concept of a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. However, instead of finding it humorous, I found it hurtful and offensive.

If I understand it correctly, the catalyst for the committee came from testimony from Bristolians about very painful experiences of discrimination that took place in our town. I think anything we can do to mitigate this and work towards inclusiveness, compassion and understanding is an honorable goal.

To make fun of people’s pain and question the validity of their experiences and then ridicule an attempt to address such discrimination and hate … I find cruel.
